We are what we eat

Judt出生于伦敦。他的父亲是出生在比利时的犹太人，母亲是北欧犹太人的后裔。

应该说：Judt属于阿什肯纳兹犹太人（Ashkenazi Jews），也就是源于中世纪德国莱茵兰一带的犹太人后裔，从族裔上讲，阿什肯纳兹是祖先可追溯到于中欧和东欧的犹太人。在大约一千年的时间里，阿什肯纳兹犹太人虽然与其他人群共处一地，却很少移民、改信或与当地人（包括其他犹太人）通婚，故在生殖上是孤立的。人类基因学家在Y染色体和线粒体研究中，发现某些单倍体型（haplotype）在阿什肯纳兹群体中概率很高，然而在普通欧洲人群中却不是这样。

基于文化、语言学和基因证据的共识是阿什肯纳兹群体发源于中东。在公元800-1000年左右其祖先移居法国北方和莱茵兰的时候，带去了巴比伦塔木德文化基础上的拉比犹太教。阿什肯纳兹犹太人一度广泛使用的意第绪语深受希伯来语和阿拉美语的影响，但却没有希腊语和拉丁语影响。最近的人类基因研究也证实很大一部分阿什肯纳兹人的祖先来自中东。

安息日晚餐大概是犹太家庭每周最隆重的一餐。

不过，Judt很抱怨母亲不善烹调。只会煮东西。父亲还比较讲究，喜欢奶酪，酒，咖啡。而他是到了法国后，才经常吃到好吃的饭。英国饭，枯燥极了。
